Adam Helms Obituary

Adam Clay Helms

August 20, 1979 - October 15, 2021

Adam Clay Helms won his ultimate championship on October 15, 2021 after a 4 year battle with ALS. At the time of his passing Adam was 42 years old. Adam was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Clayton Randle Helms Jr and Charlette Rae Adams-Helms on August 20, 1979. Adam attended Putnam City Schools from kindergarten through high school, graduating in 1998 from Putnam City High School. Post-graduation he attended the University of Central Oklahoma were he graduated with an International Business degree with a minor in Spanish. He went on to teach and coach for 16.5 years. Adam has three children, Mackenzie, Hunter, and Colten Helms. Adam’s children were the most important part of his life. From day one, every thought was for their wellbeing. Even though Adam had his own daily struggles with ALS, his thoughts centered around parenting and how to continue teaching each of his children what it means to be a good person. He set an example for them on how to be kind, thoughtful, and be a person of good character. Adam has surrounded himself with people who share the same values and when he could no longer communicate those values, his friends stepped in with their actions and were examples to his children. As well as his own children, Coach Helms had 1000s more that he cared for and strived to be a positive influence in their lives. Adam coached cross country, basketball, and track at Millwood, Southmoore, and Putnam City High Schools. Coach Helms was blessed to be the head coach of three state Championship track teams. The one question that he refused to ever answer was which team was the best though. Adam was honored to finish his teaching and coaching career at his alma mater, Putnam City High School. Adam is survived by his three children: Mackenzie, Hunter, and Colten Helms; his mother, Charlette Helms; his sister and brother in law, Courtney and Jeremy Walker; nephews Reagan Amason,Craig Walker, and Courtland Walker; and numerous extended family members and friends. Adam was preceded in death by his father, Randy Helms; maternal grandfather, Charles Adams; and paternal grandmother, Doris Ladd.
