Dr. Landis Everett Powell, Sr. was a devoted husband, a loving and present father, and a proud, affectionate grandfather. Family was the joy of his life, and he led his home with wisdom, gentleness, and unwavering faith. He cherished time spent teaching, encouraging, and praying over those he loved, leaving an indelible imprint on generations to come.
Born in Coyle, Oklahoma, to Alonzo Powell and Mildred Brothers, Landis was the eldest son and an example to many from an early age. His academic journey began in El Reno, Oklahoma, continued in Wichita, Kansas, and ultimately led him back to Oklahoma, where his passion for learning flourished. A remarkable scholar, he attended Wichita State University, Rose State College, and Central State University (now the University of Central Oklahoma), where he earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry. His dedication to service and community well-being led him to obtain a Doctorate in Public HealththeUniversity of Oklahoma, Norman,Oklahoma.
Dr. Powell dedicated his professional career to public health and safety, serving with integrity and excellence. His work reflected his lifelong commitment to protecting and uplifting others through knowledge, discipline, and compassion.
Above all, Dr. Powell’s life was guided by his deep love and admiration for Jesus Christ. He often shared the words, “I wanted to be a doctor and a preacher—if medicine can’t heal, I know God can when I pray.” That conviction shaped every aspect of his life and ultimately led him into ministry. Answering God’s call, he served faithfully and accepted a pastoral role at Trinity Church of God in Christ, where he poured wisdom, encouragement, and spiritual guidance into the lives of God’s people.
Dr. Landis Everett Powell, Sr.’s life was a testament to faith, family, scholarship, and service. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched, taught, and inspired, and through a faith that never wavered.
