Jessie Berry Obituary

A Life Well Lived: The Story of Jessie James Berry

On a crisp fall day, November 19, 1934, in the close-knit town of Jones, Oklahoma, a bright soul entered the world—Jessie James Berry—the son of Emmitt and Ardell Berry. From the very beginning, Jessie was marked by a quiet strength and a twinkle in his eye that would guide him through 90 beautiful years of life. At the tender age of two, his family packed up and made their way to Colbert, Oklahoma, where Jessie would plant his roots deep and begin to grow into the man so many came to admire and love.

Jessie was the kind of man who believed in the power of hard work and the importance of learning a trade. He wrapped up his high school studies at Metro Tech in Oklahoma City, never one to shy away from bettering himself. He later honed his skills in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, setting his hands to work in various fields. Whether he was behind the counter at a laundromat, serving his community as a Reserve Sheriff, or keeping engines running at a Kerr McGee Service Station, Jessie brought pride, diligence, and a sense of purpose to everything he touched.

But it was in the realm of beauty where Jessie’s entrepreneurial fire was truly lit. After completing Cosmetology School, he opened the doors to his own business—World of Beauty Salon. There, amid the whirl of hairdryers and the hum of conversation, Jessie showcased not just his talent, but his love for people. His chair wasn't just for styling hair—it was a place where spirits were lifted, stories were shared, and confidence was renewed.

Outside of the salon, Jessie was a true outdoorsman. He found joy and serenity in the rhythm of fishing, the thrill of hunting, the peacefulness of horseback riding, and the hard, satisfying work of raising bulls and cows. Whether on his land or near a quiet pond, Jessie was never far from nature, always at peace when his boots were on the ground and the sun was on his back.

He also had a musical soul, often found with a guitar in hand, fingers dancing across strings, playing melodies that spoke louder than words ever could. Jessie was known to enjoy a good game of cards too, surrounded by the sound of laughter, a little friendly competition, and the warmth of loved ones.

But above all, Jessie’s heart belonged to God and family. A faithful man, he served as song director at Garden Oak Church of Christ and later stood firm in his walk with Christ alongside his beloved wife at Eastside Church of Christ. Jessie’s voice in song and spirit in worship reflected the foundation on which he built his life—faith, humility, and love.

Jessie was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend—roles he wore with pride and purpose. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmitt and Ardell, his brother Harold, and sisters Emma A. Thomas and Juanita Blanton. And though they are gone, their spirits surely welcomed him home.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 28 years, Mary Berry, who stood faithfully by his side. His legacy continues through his children: James Berry, Tammy Webb, Lanitta Bridges (Ricky), Patricia Berry, and step-children Tarsha House (Randall), Loretta Miller (Anthony), and Carl Lee Fair (Jackie). His brother, Profit Charles Berry (Erdis), and a strong network of brothers-in-law—Robert L. Kirkwood (Martha), James Kirkwood (Sheila), Darrles J. Kirkwood (Wanda), and Harry Kirkwood—remain to carry the torch of his wisdom and strength.

Jessie’s light also shines through his grandchildren: Tramell Berry, Nathan Payne, Jamione Berry, Keith Webb (Amber), Porsha Webb, Shon Bridges (Monique), Miles Berry, Alexus Berry, Latora Berry, and a beautiful gathering of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Jessie James Berry’s story is not just one of years, but of impact. A man of many talents, boundless love, and deep conviction, his journey touched countless hearts. Though he has stepped into eternity, his legacy walks on in every life he influenced, every lesson he taught, and every memory we hold close.

Rest well, Mr. Berry. Job well done
